Computer science to support the protection of our planet

Hi, I’m a Juniper, an environmental computing scientist and PhD student in the Dynamic Meteorology group at the University of Helsinki

Protecting our planet and the incredible species we share it with are very close to my heart. I use computer science to support solving these global problems.

I am working on the lossy approximate compression of weather and climate data to reduce the pressure of exponentially growing data volumes.

My research focuses on building trust in lossy data compression by (1) documenting the risks of lossy compression, (2) building Compression Safeguards which wrap around any compressor to guarantee that user-specified properties are preserved, and (3) bringing together the Earth System Science and data compression research communities to collaborate on safe lossy compression.
